How to split a group expense

  1. On the Participants tab, add everyone’s names; a currency selector (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, JPY, AUD, CAD, SGD) sets the symbols used throughout.
  2. On the Expenses tab, log each item: description, amount, who paid, and which participants share it — the checkbox list lets one dinner exclude whoever was not there.
  3. The Settle Up tab shows everyone’s balance, the total spent, and the list of transfers that clears the debt — with a copy button for the summary you can paste into the group chat.

How the settlement is computed

Each expense is split evenly among the participants selected for it. A person’s balance is what they paid minus what they owed; positive balances are owed money, negative ones owe it. The settle-up list matches debtors to creditors greedily so the number of transfers is as small as possible — in a group of six, three payments usually clear everything instead of the fifteen pairwise transfers people work out by hand. Differences below half a cent are treated as settled, so rounding never produces a phantom ₹0.01 debt.

Trip-ready and private

The whole calculation runs in your browser; the amounts and names you enter are never uploaded, which matters for a tool that ends up holding everyone’s spending. It is built for the common case of equal shares among whoever attended — holidays, flatmate bills, group dinners. Unequal shares (half for the kid, double for the room with the balcony) are handled by logging two entries rather than a percentage field.
